The California State University, Dominguez Hills Toro Auxiliary Partners was incorporated in 1968 as a partner of the University to provide services and develop and enhance programs that are an integral part of the University's educational mission. CSU Dominguez Hills is a highly diverse, metropolitan university primarily serving the South Bay area of Los Angeles County. Established in 1960, CSU Dominguez Hills is one of the 23 campuses that comprise the California State University system.
Position Information
Employment at Toro Auxiliary Partners is on an at-will basis and can be terminated by either an employee or Toro Auxiliary Partners at any time with or without cause or advanced notice. Permanent status can neither be obtained nor granted.
This is a part-time, non-exempt position.
About the Position
Research from the Search Institute informs us that relationships are a key factor in student efficacy and motivation, which impacts student attendance. Having a positive relationship with at least one strong adult will promote a sense of belonging, especially for students with disabilities, low-income students, foster youth, English Learners, students in crisis, and those who are experiencing homelessness. Inclusive of parent and community participation. Relationships are at the heart of what youth need to learn, grow, and thrive. People of all ages look up to whom they can relate. Relating happens when relationships are built on” authenticity, vulnerability, trust, and worthiness.
The Project SELF Mentor will provide students with ongoing support and encouragement to impact student success.
Responsibilities
- Provide support to students and will serve as role models to students who are experiencing barriers that keep them from attending school regularly.
- Work and meet regularly with students on the school’s “Watch List”.
- Will be trained in attendance strategies and practices.
- Work closely with families and teachers.
- Conduct a ‘check - in, check out’ (CICO) daily with their students.
- Serve as an advocate for the child with adults on campus when necessary.
- Will meet regularly with the site principal to review data and review steps in the action plan.
- Meet monthly with the Administrator over K-12 attendance for data analysis and ongoing training.

- Enjoy mentoring students for which services are being provided.
- Be able to explain concepts to others effectively.
- Effectively communicate study strategies to ensure student success.
- Work comfortably with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Exhibit patience and positive attitudes in establishing an encouraging learning environment.
- Possess good organizational skills and completes paperwork in a timely manner.
- Ability to plan and implement lesson plans, as needed.
- Ability to work independently and within a team environment as needed.
- Ability to interface and interact with all levels of staff (administrators, teachers, and
- students).
- Self-motivated, responsible, and professional attitude at all times.
Minimum Qualifications
- Enrollment status in at least 6 units per term/semester at a 2-year or 4-year institution or college graduate with a Bachelor’s degree. Must maintain a minimum grade point average (G.P.A) of 2.75 to qualify for or continue employment.
- Must pass a criminal background check (Live-Scan fingerprinting) and Background prior to beginning employment with children
- Must present proof of negative Tuberculosis skin test (Mantoux) prior to beginning employment dated within 60 days (no reimbursement).
- Must have access to reliable transportation to arrive at the worksite at the scheduled time consistently.
- Resume and Unofficial College Transcripts are REQUIRED.
