About GEAR UP:

Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) is a federally funded initiative based at the California State University Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), serving the high school graduating class of 2028 attending school in the Centinela Valley Union High School District (CVUHSD). GEAR UP works in partnership with educational and community-based institutions to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education by providing a variety of support services and enrichment activities.

 

Position Summary:                        

The College Mentor will support GEAR UP Program Coordinators and Student Success Coaches in implementing various services to help high school students with their academics, explore colleges and careers, and plan and prepare for their future. College Mentors will support the lunch-time College and Career Club, after-school Study Labs, and student success workshops. They may conduct individual and group mentoring sessions to check on student academic progress, identify their areas of strength and opportunities for growth, and make proper referrals to student support and enrichment services. In addition, they will assist with the planning and implementing major events (e.g., National GEAR UP Week, College & Career Fairs, Campus Visits). Furthermore, they will help maintain student files, track participation, and conduct data entry in our student information system.

 

Position Type
This is a part-time, non-benefited position with employment through Toro Auxiliary Partners. Employment is at-will and may be terminated by either party at any time, with or without cause or notice.

 

Days/Hours: Minimum of 3 days a week, 12-15 hours per week, between 8 am-4 pm

Salary: $20 per hour

School Placement: August-June

Work location: Centinela Valley Union High School District

 

Qualifications:

  • Be an undergraduate student at CSUDH or another local college/university.
  • Maintain good academic standing (+2.5 cumulative GPA).
  • At least one year of experience working with high school students from underserved and underrepresented communities.
  • Knowledge of higher education college systems and financial aid.
  • Experience providing workshops about college options, admissions requirements, and application procedures.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be reliable and punctual.
  • Must be able to handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Must pass LiveScan fingerprinting provided by the program.
  • Must have reliable transportation
